Significance and rituals to perform Pitra Paksha Shraadh

It is believed that the subtle bodies of our ancestors (Pitra) reside in Lord Yama’s region (Yamalok) and reach the earth in higher proportions during full moon night (poornima) of Chaturmas. Hence, Hindus consider this 15 day ritual to be ideal for performing rites for ancestors, believing that during this period; subtle bodies of deceased ancestors from Yamalok visit their relatives on earth. So if the rite of shraadh is performed on one of the days during this fortnight, then the subtle bodies of deceased ancestors remain gratified for the rest of the year.

Pitra Paksha Shraadh, the annual rites and rituals performed for the departed souls of the dead ancestors by their kith and kin during Pitra Paksha (dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha) in the month of Ashwin (September – October) is of great importance in Hindu religion. It is believed that the souls will attain peace by the Shraadh rituals performed during the fortnight.

In 2009, the Shraadh Pitra Paksha will fall during September 4 (full moon night) and September 18.

According to the Hindu mythology, the Shraadh performed during Ashwin Pitra Paksha reaches the ancestors immediately and their souls rest in peace. It is believed by Hindus that all the sinful acts committed by the dead will be cleansed by the shraadh. Those departed souls who do not receive shraadh are said to wander aimlessly on earth.

Pitra Paksha Shraadh is also offered by people to ancestors whose death dates they have forgotten or to the relatives who had no children and who met with violent death like accidents or murders. Those people who fail to perform the annual shraadh (performed on the death date) can also offer Shraadh during this period.

Rituals performed during Shraadh

The rituals of Shraadh should always be performed under the guidance of a learned person or priest. During the period of Shraadh, the relatives of the deceased are suggested to take vegetarian food like vegetables, protein-less food, and should avoid non vegetarian meals. Son of the deceased (known as the karta) observes various rituals including sending invitation to Brahmins on that day and performs all the rituals as the way of expressing his heartfelt gratitude and thanks to his ancestors. The karta offers food to the deserving Brahmins (especially liked by the ancestors) and treats them with all hospitality and finally does “Pinda Pradaana”. This entire ceremony is conducted at any sacred spot such as the margin of a holy river.

Krishna Janmashtami

CELEBRATE KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI WITH JOY AND GAIETY

Sri Krishna Janmashtami is one of the important famous Hindu festivals that is being celebrated across India. Every year the festival is celebrated with much pomp and gaiety. Krishna Janmashtami, also known as “Krishnashtami”,”Gokulashtami”, “Ashtami Rohini”, “Srikrishna Jayanti”, “Sree Jayanthi” or sometimes merely as “Janmashtami”, celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and is observed on the eighth day of the dark half i.e., Krishna Paksh of the month of August Sravanam / Sravana Maasam / Aavani of Hindu calendar (generally late August or early September of the Gregorian / English calendar month) when the Rohini Star is ascendant Krishna, svayam bhagavan.

The ritual is to fast the previous day (Saptami, seventh day), which is followed by a night-long vigil commemorating the birth of Krishna at night, and his immediate removal by his father Vasudeva to a foster-home for safe-keeping which is completed at midnight after aarti, a special prayer and offering bhog to the lord.

This year in India, Janmashtami will primarily be celebrated on August 14^th.

The festival of Janmashtami is considered a very pious day by Hindus. Lot of bhajan singing, hymn chanting and poojas are performed this day. Devotees queue all the major Krishna temples to seek his blessings. People perform elaborate poojas during the festival. They keep day long fast. Functions and prayer meetings are organized to share the glory of their favorite God.

Unlike the general pooja process, the vidhan for this day begins early in the morning with devotees giving a bath or abhishek to Bal Gopal’s idol with gangajal, ghee, water, honey and curd. The idol is then adorned with new clothes (preferably in yellow colour), stone or other precious jewellery.
Next, the idol of lord is offered bhog; the contents of bhog may vary. Fruits, kheer, pedha, milk, and milk products are made. There are devotees who offer chappan bhog(56 dishes) to Bal Gopal.

Thereafter, special Krishna pooja is performed. The cradle containing the divine infant’s idol is rocked, conch is blown. Devotees sing Krishna aarti, some people read out 108 names of lord. They get totally immersed in the name and praise of Gopal.

After the entire pooja is over, devotees break their fast by having panchamrit. The time of breaking the fast may vary; this is so, because the time of performing pooja also differs from place to place. While some devotees choose to perform pooja at midnight and break fast, others perform pooja in the evening and have food.

POOJA ITEMS FOR JANMASHTAMI

The festival of janmashtami is observed with lot of gay and happiness all over India. Special poojas are performed both in homes as well as temples. The entire day is devoted to remembering and singing the praise of Lord Krishna. Devotees welcome and celebrate the birth of their favorite god with lot of fervor.

There are certain special items required for Krishnashtami pooja. Important pooja items are listed below:

Lord Krishna’s idol with cradle and conch
New clothes, flute and ornaments for Lord Krishna
Pooja thali containing a bell, diya, rice, elaichi(cardamom), supari, paan leaves, roli, small container filled with water, sindoor, incense sticks, flowers and ghee.
For Panchamrit -milk, curd, gangajal, honey and ghee.
